Fluoride Treatment in Nottingham
Fluoride can be found in many food and drinks and of course fluoride toothpaste.
Fluoride helps fight tooth decay by:
- encourages teeth to remineralise / repair themselves. Fluoride cannot repair cavities, but it can reverse some tooth decay.
- reduces the ability of the bacteria in plaque to produce acid which demineralises (disolves) tooth enamel - creating cavities.
- In children, if fluoride is taken whilst the tooth is developing it alters the structure of the developing enamel (the white outer coat of a tooth) making it more resistant to acid attack.
At Grangewood Dental Practice, Dr Amarjit Gill provides this treatment for adults and children. We have special fluoride varnishes and gels which have a higher level of fluoride than those found in toothpastes and mouth washes. These varnishes are painted on to the teeth or in the case of gels or foams these are placed into a special tray like a mouth guard and appied to the teeth for a few minutes. These are applied to adults to help reduce sensativity and for children to strengthen their growing teeth. Fluoride supplements are also available as liquids and tablets and are available at the practice.
